Default Looking for a Vectra B 1.8 Mode... Things to look out for?

    Looking at a 1.8 Vec B for the mother-in-law.

Found a nice looking one on an R plate for £900.
    1.8 LS Model
    Air Con
    98k
    History upto 41k only (******)
New clutch, exhaust full Tax and Test.

Thought that was a good price? Will do cambelt and full service for her before hand so history I suppose isn't a major issue.

Any niggles? Or anything major to look for?

    Drives nice, goes well.

Anyone selling any Vectra Bs at the moment approx £1k.

The exhaust studs on the cylender tend to snap off on the cylender next to the cambelt. Start the engine from cold and with the bonnet open rev the engine slightly, if they have snapped then you will hear an "exhaust blow" strangely the noise will disapear when the engine is hot, I had to replace them on my old vectra b.
mind you with 98k on the clock they might have already been changed.

Also the water pump can give up on one with a mile or two on it , if it does it throws the cambelt off and well...........game over.

I plan to rag it senseless first before the cash is changed hands just to check it will get me 10 miles home. Then do a complete service on it.

Cambelts won't be too hard on these are they?

I would change the guide pullies and the tensioner, have a good look at the water pump and may be change that, whilst you are at it. You will need a tool to lock the camshafts, but the job should be straight forward though.

Good point. Got quoted £80 delivered for complete cambelt kit for the Vec genuine parts so thats a bargain.

Water pump won't be too hard to change either. Sounds a plan

Can borrow one from my friendly Vx garage

Want to check to see if the idle valve has been changed,1.8 and 2.0 ecotec were well known for stalling at junctions etc

Later ones had a X after the GM part number on the end and the engines also might have a breather box coming off of the top breather pipe on the rocker cover which is ment to stop the idle valve from bunging up
