Default Which Signum? Reliability is priority.

    Hi All!
I'm just about to buy a Signum, but ... don't know which one to choose. Reliability is the priority. Hearing about fairly recent problems with 2.2 direct f. pumps / sensors made me think. Don't care about myself so much, but don't want a little child suffer (and my wife moan) when breaking down on m-way. Understanding that breakdowns happen I still think you can advice which ones are the "safest" bets even if it means loosing on performance or economy a bit if necessary. Price max is about £4500 (+-) and it can be petrol or diesel. I could obviously stick to Honda Civic, but somehow fell in love with the look and features of Signum (against some reviews). Hardly anyone is mentioning 1.8 petrol versions ... any comments about these?
I will appreciate any advice and can't think about any better place to ask than here. Greets, valizka.

Just try and find a 2.0T... Great engine (Made by Saab) and if you drive sensibly you can get in the 30's MPG combined. Mines a 2.0T and I love it, especially when it comes to joining the M1 or a dual carriage way. I haven't heard of ANYONE moaning about their 2.0T... It always seems to be the 1.9CDTI or like you said the 2.2direct. But saying that... with the amount of Vectra C's on the road, thats the reason why there seems to be a high percentage of problems with certain models... You can get alot for your money. I paid 5k a year ago for my 2.0T Design with 40k on clock. There's lots of deals to be had out there...

    I've got a 3.0 V6 CDTI, a relative has the 1.8
No issues with either, although mine is high mileage and as typical the VX parts are starting to fail now that the car is over 60K miles
The only thing I ever hear about the 1.8 is the sticking valve gear

depends on wot u want your running costs to be the 1.8 petrol & the 1.9 150 cdti will be cheaper to run but for reliabilaty its a choice of 3 the 3.0cdti , 2.0t , 3.2 and for all the toys go for the Elite or design models.

Never had any problems with my 2.2 direct. It's a great all round engine.

As you are looking for an older model you will need to be careful of the dreaded dual mass flywheel issue on manuals. Mine is fairly new and dmf went in less than a year. If you check this site you will see that on the 1.9 cdti the engine torque is a problem for the dmf .It is also said that if dmf has been replaced you will not need another as part is improved. I think if I was back in the market would go for a 1.9cdti auto. Dealer price for dmf and clutch will set you back £1500+ unless of course you are able to do the dmf and clutch yourself. Subject to that Signum is a great car - I have done 23000 miles in about 14 months.

Any of them except the 1.9 - all the other engines have problems that affect a tiny proportion of engines. The 1.9 has a tiny number that aren't affected by the dreaded inlet manifold and EGR.

The 1.8 would probably be a poor choice if you were carry passengers all the time.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Appreciated! Will probably go for 2.0T. Now my wife kicked in with additional requirements: low mileage, silver or black, tinted glass to mention just a few ... and these cars are obviously sold or 10000 miles away . Not a big deal though - will find one sooner or later. Once again, thanks for help.

Don't touch a 1.8, it's bad enough in a Vec let alone a Sig, so underpowered, the best one I'd recommend overall is a 2.2 DTi, it does have a couple of niggles but they aren't as bad as the rest, just make sure it starts from cold easily and have the crankshaft pulley replaced on it for pom.
