Leave the car on a dry level piece of solid ground overnight, for at least six hours
Ideally inspect between 02:00 and 06:00
Check underneath for drips of oil
    Check the oil level
Start the engine, let run for about 60 seconds, and switch off
    Leave for 15 minutes
    Check the oil level

I do that once a week
It's quite surprising the difference in oil level

I was always under the impression that you check oil before you start and thats it, thats what we do with Generators at work

Page 272 in owners manual, in summary it states to have the car on a level surface. The car is to be at operating temperature and then left for atleast 5 mins before checking the level.

Thats what it says on the sticker under my bonnet,so i'd say the old way, checking it from cold has changed, you learn something new everyday............

Yeah, needs to be warm. If I pull the dispstick when the thing is cold (and it's been the same on every Vauxhall I've had), there's oil half way up the dipstick and you get a different reading each time.
