Default Rant at VX (yes, another one)

Following on from this thread http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67140, the car went back to VX stealer on Tuesday of this week. They started the car from cold (the day was 1-2 degC) and they said they couldn't see or hear anything untoward.

What they did say was that both the inner and outer gaiter on the o/s driveshaft had splits in them and needed replacing @ £206 inc VAT. They said the labour time was 2 hours but I know that TIS2000 says 0.7+0.2 = 0.9 hours, so we argued the toss and agreed at 1 hour if I decided to go ahead with the work.

"Why do the gaiters need replacing?" I ask.

"Cos they're spilt and the inner one is throwing grease over the bottom pulleys and belts and this is causing the noise you get when starting up on cold mornings" said VX.

Thursday - took o/s front wheel off and had a good look at everything but no splits. Maybe very small oil leak from bottom pulley on auxillary belt but that's it. Noise - now thinking it's the auxillary belt adjuster which wasn't replaced a few months ago when VX did it.

Now the car sailed through the MOT a few weeks ago, so off I pop to see my very helpful MOT tester. Straight in, up on the ramps and guess what........ no spilts on any of the gaiters. At the very most and not urgent, he said I might need a new clip on the o/s driveshaft inner gaiter. Bunged him £10 for his troubles and 1/2 hour on the ramps, and it now transpires he's an ex VX technician (now he tells me).

Back to VX today to query their diagnosis. Technician (?) comes out and says "if you look down from the bonnet, you can see there's grease coming out".

"Where?" says me , at which point we begged to differ as to i) the noise problem on cold start up and ii) the need for gaiters.

My rant - VX trying to do me out of 200 notes that had nothing to do with the noise problem and a job that doesn't really need doing. How many other customers are they conning money out of for work that just doesn't need doing?? Just because they get idiots coming in that know nothing, why tar everyone with the same brush and assume you know Jack Schit?

Guess who I'll be using for future works? The ex VX techy that does MOTs.

Well done, Its not what you expect from a main dealer but looks like the way things are going in this country. Stick with the ex vx man, its always nice to find someone you can trust.

It just goes on & on & has been for years, main stealers. Nothing like a recommendation & then using someone you can trust. Not an easy task I know.

Yeah, they are robbing bar stewards. When the car was in this week asked about a replacement key, my remote locking/unlocking doesnt work.
£55 for the key then £54.63 to program it for the car!
As I have seen other threads here about the cost, guess they wont be having my custom for this

If you think it may be the aux belt making a noise just slip it off and start up, no noise = belt pully.
