    Default Holes found!

Jacked the car up earlier to change fog light bulbs to mtec h3s and noticed 2 large holes underneath by the front jacking point. Also the same for the other side. Could somebody look under their vec pre facelift to see if its just my car. Looks like they could have a rubber grommets missing but not sure. I would say the holes are about 1" in diameter.

Looks perfectly normal Graham. Its one of the strengthening points of the chassis. If there were rubber grommets in those holes then water would have nowhere to go and it would start rusting.

Same on mine Graham, a 2002 GSi. Mine are only about 1/2" deep, same as yours?

Very good timing as mine's on the jack as we speak to check the o/s driveshaft boots. VX stealer says they're both split but they ain't. Guess who's getting a rollocking 2mrw?

    Anyway, HTH.

Holy crap, you jacked off the jacking point with a trolley jack! The bit with the holes is where you should be jacking with a trolley (you can see marks where it's been jacked there before).

There's nothing wrong with jacking up where he did. I use a trolley jack on that point all the time - although mine has a larger saddle with a rubber pad so it makes it even easier to jack there. With that sort of jack you just have to be a bit more careful that it doesn't move. Before I had my current jack and was using a jack like that, I'd just put a large block of wood between the saddle and the jacking point to make it safer/steadier.

As for jacking where you said - on the bit with the hole it - I certainly wouldn't. I don't think it's strong enough for jacking under and it's also quite far in to the centre of the car, so if using axle stands it's going to make it more 'interesting' if you've got one side up on a stand and then go to jack the other side - due to jacking closer to the centre of the car is and where the centre of balance of the car will be.

Thanks for the tip Duncan, piece off wood next time to ensure a safe lift. Where would a garage lift it from then, the jacking point i used?
