    Default Insurance for young drivers

Sorry, typo, should read "for YOUNG drivers" - doh.

My son, who's nearly 16, asked me what the insurance would be on say, a Ford Ka?

He and I want to know, although he's not 17 yet and passed his test, where's the best place to go for new/young drivers insurance?

This way we'll have some idea of cost and he can start to save his pennies. Put some details in to Direct Line who I'm with and it came up with £1714 fully comp for a 52 plate 1.3 Ford Ka.

    Time to think again son.

    I paid £1800 3rd party on a 1991 1.1 Ford Fiesta Freedom when I was 17, so that's a ****** good price for a 17 year old.

My Wife passed her test 2 weeks ago, and we have just bought her a 2007 Ford Ka, and it's costing us £800 a year fully comp with me as a named driver (would have been almost £1k for her on her own). She is 25 this year.

Try www.bell.co.uk they will be a lot cheaper than Direct Line. Direct Line are very exoensive for younger drivers.

I switched from DL to Bell and saved quite a bit when i was 19 but now im 26 DL are cheaper.

Maybe they just don't like young drivers.

Insurance is a funny thing, my brother whos 18 got insured on quite heavily modded escort mk2 alot cheaper than a standard corsa/fiesta/micra, he used Adrian Flux and they came out cheapest by a long shot overall I think he paid around 2.2k for it. I used quinn direct for my insurance for my first year and they were quite cheap. As Craig1985 said pass plus can give quite a discount with some companys but with others its worth nothing.

i did a bit of searching for a cheap car to insure and found the 957cc fiesta the cheapest, also i would recommend your son do a pass plus as this will pay for itself on its first use as most insurance companies give 10% discount and costs around £100
