    Default engine woes 2.0 DTi

Hi all, got a vectra on a 52 plate, and its covered 157k however, last week, it developed a kind of top end rattle i went to a local garage and the guy told me not to worry given the mileage. had it serviced on saturday and also put injector cleaner in it, the guy who serviced it said basically the same as the local garage chappy........ this morning i had just pulled out of a junction and selected 2nd gear and to describe what happened was like it jumped out of gear (but it didnt) and it died. tried to start it it was like a dying battery and a kind of klonk at certain times as the engine turned over. it flat refused to start i havent had the oil light on at any time and thinking about the noise it reminded me of the noise that the ford pinto engine used to make when the camshaft went. i was also told that the 2.0 DTi CANNOT be rebiult ...... any ideas please / prices many thanks

Any engine can be re-built, if the parts are available. Some are more difficult than others though.

They are chain driven and the chain has no service interval. Basically change it when it rattles.

You can't easily swap for a CDTi - they are totally different animals.

If the engine is fooked, the cheaper option may be to get a replacement long engine and swap the fuel and ancilliary systems from your old lump.

Yeah, the DTi is a considerably better lump as far as reliability goes. The swirl valves work for a start...

Do the DTi's have an 'interference' top end ?

Yes, all diesels do due to the compression ratio. Plus the DTI is a 16v engine with a single cam, so usually the cam rockers break first. The Valves are usually fine if the chain goes at low engine speed.

But, considering the miles it's probably just easier dropping in a replacement engine, there's lots of them about.
