    Default new insurance plans

anyone heard these new plans to make all car insurance manditory, thats fine i see why but its messed up any chance of me buying a project car to do up in a workshop to replace to vec with,

my plan was to buy a cosworth and only run it in the summer well i certainly cant afford to insure 2 cars for one of them to stand still in a lockup to 9 months a year.

yet again a minority ruin it for honest people

It's great in theory, but completely impractical, and as you rightly point out that if a vehicle is SORN then there is no need for third party cover

Anyway, keeping a vehicle on the road requires insurance, so it's mandatory anyway...

yeah agree about on the road ive had a zero miles policy before for just the thing as i had no lockup, but now i do and their saying its for any vehicle you own, what about summer bike riders?

Make me pi55 one minute they say "worse times for money millions face losing jobs and cant get credit" then they say here's another bill to pay for

I would need to read the proposal in more detail, but I can't see any change that would affect normal use
If the vehicle is SORN then it would not need insurance
Not sure when or where this proposal would apply

    example :
If you own a motorbike and only have it on the road between 01 April and 30 September, then providing you make it SORN then there would be no need to have third party insurance, although it would probably be just as cheap as you would probably still want to have at least fire and theft cover

It might be to close the loophole where people do not declare their vehicle SORN, remove the vehicle from the road and therefore remove the third party insurance
There is then the temptation to operate the vehicle on the road, without insurance

Seems a bit pointless, unless there is a plan to link V5 with insurance in the near future...
In the same way as expired Road Tax results in a automatic penalty, a V5 without insurance could result in a penalty
As above, this is completely impractical as many vehicles are off-road for a good reason, with no chance of being used on the road!

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/motoring/...-drive-it.html

I know it is not official info, but it appears to answer a few questions, namely:

    1) it is only proposed legislation, which if voted in will come into effect in 2011
    2) SORN'd cars will be exempt.
    3) It would appear they want to link the DVLA V5c's to the insurance database. Which is not that radical a step since police already have access to this database anyway - they would just be automating things.

When I first heard about this on the radio, I immeadiately jumped to conclusions based on the sensationalist reporting too. i.e what about classic cars, people with loads of bikes etc, but honestly I don't think it will matter too much and is a positive thing.

even though a classic car or recreational motorcycle may only be in use for 6 months of the year, say, surely you'd still want it insured for fire/theft, even if it's under a blanket in the garage?
but it does need clarifying for someone restoring a classic bike, for example which may be in 1000 pieces while bits get powder coated/chromed etc. it would be blatantly unfair to expect an owner to keep something like that insured.

It's not as harsh as you may think. The same concerns were aired when the road tax rules changed. Everyone thought you would have to tax a car, even if you did'nt use it. So SORN was introduced.

The way I see it happening, there will be an insurance type of SORN that you will have to declare if your not using the car, then you will be fine.

It's all a big fuss about nothing.
