Question DVLA - Want rid of Private Plate

    Hi All,

Hopefully someone with the knowledge or personal experience can help out here. I have trawled the DVLA/ gov website and cannot seem to find any info on the following:

    * I have a personal plate on my car that I want rid of - completely. Its got no real worth (apart from sentimental) and I am selling my current car so just want rid of the plate and back to an age related item.

I dont want to pay for retention or sell the numbers. Can I just surrender the number back to the DVLA? Will they charge a fee?

Any help would be appreciated - sensible answers please.

    Regards, Matt

Thanks Soulman - had planned to call them this afternoon if no one could give an answer off the forum.

TBH - it just makes the car sell easier - people want to see the year on the car and if they dont want the plate it creates an issue/ slows the sale.

i think if it's on the car you only have 2 options - leave it on or pay to have it put on retention/transferred to another car, which costs £125. what is the plate? it has no value? it must have if you bought it once - why not post it up here? or if you don't want anything for it, offer it to anyone who will pay the transfer/retention fee?

If it has no worth i would leave it on the car and leave the new owner to decide what to do with it.

Im no expert on this matter as I always just transfer my plate but I know once you put it on retention you have to pay annually to hold it on retention so assume if you dont want it then leave on retention for a year then dont pay to keep it then it just defaults back to the DVLA. May be wrong but thats my understanding!! As has been said though if it were me I would leave it on the car, even if has no value potential buyers may think otherwise and buy the car in the hope of selling the plate on!

If you're part exchanging leave it on otherwise you'll have to pay to put it on retention then leave it for 2 years to die!

The Car will be sold privately - and every car that I have owned that has had one of my plates on - when it came to sell - the buyers didnt want the plate anyway.

So can anyone advise other than putting it on retention - that the dvla will not accept the plate back?

I am looking for definitive answer really guys - not advice on selling the car tbh.

    Best Regards, Matt
