Default Help! Setting up a Belkin Wireless Router

    Hi,

My nephew has purchased a Belkin N Wireless Router. He's asked me to have a look at it. I've been to their house and the set up they have ain't the best. They have an old NTL cable modem with USB connection to the PC. There is no network card on the PC with an RJ45 connection.

So everything I've read about this Belkin router says that the modem it will be connected to needs an RJ45, not USB connection to the PC.

Basically there are only RJ45 connections on the back of the Belkin router, so is there anyway of connecting the NTL Cable Modem to the Belkin router and then through to the PC with the current set up?

    Thanks.

It should be possible. I remember my brother did this with his NTL modem and a router. I think what he did was have the NTL modem connected as normal and then set up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and then had the router connected to the ethernet port on the PC and the connection was shared that way.

EDIT: Just read it again and there's no network card on the PC. You're not going to get anywhere in that case then. You need some way of the router being able to connect to the PC i.e. a network card. They're as cheap as cheaps.

    Cheers Duncan,

That's just what I thought, I only work with networks and PCs with a network card! So to see a modem with only USB connection has thrown me!

Thing is the poor kid has saved up from his paperround and got this router without knowing the ins and outs. Guess he'll just have to deliver a few more papers!

If he's only just bought the router, can he not return it and get one that is cable compatible instead then?

Sounds like an Old Modem . I had one years ago NTl then used to supply a USB\ETHERNET converter. Ask Virgin to supply their wireless Netgear router.

They will probably change the modem for an Ethernet one if you phone and ask nicely. MY black modem is Ethernet only

this would suggest your modem is obsolete and un supported so should get free replacement ethernet modem
