Default Most economical motorway speed in 6th?

    Hi All,

I've been thinking recently, doesn't happen much, what is the most economical speed to drive at on the motorway in 6th? I'm referring to the 150 CDTi.

I've had differing opinions. The car is doing pretty much 70mph at 2,000 rpm. Some say that this is more efficient than going 60mph as the revs are below the peak torque.

    Any opinions?

i've found my car does alot better at 70mph on fuel than say at 60 or even 55!

    so i stay at 70
think doing less than 70 in 6th isnt doing the engine anygood as you can hear it strugglinh to cope!

I saw a response to a letter in Auto Express form vauxhall stating that 'the car is most efficientin its peak tourqe band'. I'm not so sure I agree with that in all cases though.

I do as close to 65mph as I can. I do about 100mile a day on the motorway and since last March I've clocked up just over 25000miles, and averaged just under 51mpg.

It was higher than that but with me being in a rush recently, and fuel coming down I've been driving faster. I still give the engine a good work out in town, and on the motorway every so often jst to make sure things are OK.

Not bad for a big old 150bhp Signum, which by the book should only do 47mpg.

Over the past month I have done a 45 mile trip to Haverhill from Epping, where I live. This is pretty much all motorway driving and the first time I stuck between 55-60 mph and got 39.7 MPG and the second I stuck the cruise control on at around 69 mph and got 37.2 so i'd say the lower speed is best for my 2.0T. Allthough would the cruise control make a difference to the out come? as first trip I didn't use it.

Just to make things a little more complicated, the drag from air resistance is proportional to the square of the vehicle speed...

Vectra CDTI Auto with BSR Remap, I know the auto makes a big difference but don't actually get in to 6th until doing just under 70 but then I'm at RPM and get MPG go to just above 70 and drops to mid 30's and if I sit a 65MPH i get 42MPG

average MPG for car is 38 - 40MPG though

I have found that I set my cruise at 67mph (on the clock) this is probably about 1800-1900rpm and this gives me the best motorway mpg, on a daily 70 mile round trip, I get between 51 & 56mpg at that constant speed.
