Default Help with 406 clutch please

My dad needs a new clutch for his 406 2.0HDI year2000

Ive got quoted from Mr Clutch at £260 and Nationwide Autocentre at £540 !

Anyone know how many hours it should take to change.

The nearest Mr Clutch is 35 miles away but at least its a fixed price , not sure if he would be better going to a local garage, but then if it takes ages it the bill will soon mount up

Be very careful with Mr clutch, they have a terrible reputation

took my Austin Ambassador in to them years ago, I had no reverse gear as the gearbox was shot

they said they would look at it, an hour later they come back and said it was knackered which i already knew, but the thing was,

" they never even looked at the car"

i was sat in the waiting room, with my car parked right outside the window

Gotta be honest here, I thought my Vec B thrust bearing was on it's way out, I rang Mr Clutch for a prices, and the guy said it might be e box bearing on the layshaft and didn't want to replace the wrong thing, maybe he was just a good one, given the difference in price I'd check if the Autocentre has quoted you for a flywheel as well.

Mr Clutch bristol quoted £260 but be carefull they skim the flywheel and then tell you after they have done it. So you don't no if they have or not, So if you use them make sure you say do not skin flywheel. my mate did it for £150 inc clutch mine had done 90K and flywheel was fine even thought dare I say it. It had a lady owner. Normaly use clutch pedal as footrest.

I had the 2.1 TD 406 Diesel estate and it's an engine out job to change the clutch.

To get the low stance look at the front, they rotated the engine back into the bulkhead and the local garage i use regularly say it's a real pain changing them

Mr Clutch sounds the best bet then so far.

What does skimming the flywheel do ? is it a seperate thing to the clutch ?

would not take my car anywhere near mr clutch, they have a bad reputation that is 100% true,i have seen several of thier customers where the starter moters have fell off because they have not done the bolts up,they are cheap because they rush the job,you should not need the flywheel skimmed unless your clutch is down to the rivets and has csored the flywheel,a skimmed flywheel should in theory make the clutch last longer as it will be as new,but it is not a thing i would recommend you get done unless the clutch face is badly scored
