Default What affect does bigger wheels have

Just a quick question to put out to you all.
At the mo i have the bog standard steel wheels on but i'm going to up grade to 19's soon. The question is does changing the wheel size affect the accuracy of the speedo and if so by how much. Is it possible to get it recallibrated if needed and if so how much?
Alright i lied that's more like two and a half questions
    Any help is much appreciated

Yes it affect's the speedo. You need to get the car on tec2 and tell it now has 19"s.

Yes, my SXi had 16's as standard and now has 18's and the speedo is out about 2 mayb 3 MPH, ull also notice a loss in full economy due to there being more rolling radius i.e. 4 mayb 5 MPG! Not sure if u can get the speedo recalibrated tho, I assume u can?!

Not necessarily, it depends on the tyres you put on the new rims. Overall diameter (or circumference) is what matters.

This calculator shows the effect of different wheel/tyre sizes:

you don't have to TECH2 your car when you chanse the tires had 16" with 205/55/16 tires then 225/40/18 and now 205/50/17 and goin to have 225/30/20 and the speedo clock works it in the tire size not in the rims, but your going to have more fuel goin then!

As above, the difference in the overall circumference as you go to larger wheels with lower profile tyres is only a few %, so no real need to get the speedo adjusted, but it can be done easily through Tech 2 or Vaux-COM.

On my 18s it changed from over-reading by a couple of mph to 3-4 mph (compared to GPS), so not a big difference. I keep meaning to plug in my Vaux-COM and adjust the wheel circumference setting once I've calculated what it is.

I know you didn't ask the question as such, but the other difference you'll going from 16" to 19" is a noticeably firmer/harsher ride.

Is it the fact that they will be lower profile tyres or the actual wheelsize that makes it a firmer ride? I went from bog standard 15" steely's to 17" alloys on an octavia I used to have and couldn't really tell much difference?

It's basically the lower profile that makes it firmer - less 'cushioning between tyre and rim and also the sidewalls have to be firmer/stronger as they are smaller.

It would depend on what the profiles were, but you're less likely to notice a difference in that transition than from 17" to 19" due to the profile differences. i.e. the % change in profile is greater from 17" to 19" than from 15" to 17" if you see what I mean.

I only ask because my main concern is that i'll be toddling along at 30 (or thats what the speedo will say) and then i end up getting pulled over for going nearer 35 - 40 thats why i asked about getting the speedo done. what is the thing you're on about plugging in and changing the circumference size? how much is it? what else does it do? where do you get one? and is it worth getting?

    (oooooh!!!!! loads of questions)
