confused Alternator light coming on and loss of power steering

I have been driving this Vectra since August without problems. My son had it before me and did a fair mileage himself with no probs.
The other day when I was coming back from a fairly long drive, the alternator light came on with a 'set of tools' light also, and I lost the power steering.
I stopped and got the car home with the help of 'green flag'.
My local service guys came round and they started the car OK and no lights came on. They drove it back to their place and the lights came on again but they got it to their place. Fan belt was OK and they got it checked electrically but no problem could be detected.
I have now got to get it home (2 miles) and the to Vauxhall (5 miles) to get it checked there.
Is it safe to drive without the power steering and Has anyone got any advice about this please?

When you say fan belt was okay, are you meaning the auxiliary belt that runs the alternator, AC compressor, power steering. alternator etc.?

Yes, it is safe to use without power steering, just more effort will be required to steer (considerably more effort) - so anticipate that.

Is the battery starting the car OK? If the alternator is not charging, and the belt is ok, then the PS will de-activate to conserve battery power. (as it's electromechanical)

Does the AC run with the engine on??

    Sounds like a duff alternator.

    To Duncan
Yes I think i am talking about the belt that drives the alternator (although I've never actually seen it). Certainly it must drive the power steering cos I lost it.
    To Ste
Thanks for your opinion. The car is starting OK. I just drove back from my mechanics place with no probs. They said they can't fix it so I'm going to have to go to Vauxhall I suppose. Have a good trip to India. Whatever the weather its bound to be better than here. After the freeze up its now raining cats and dogs
