I've done 25k since july in mine, not mega mileage, but the car has barely missed a beat in this time, probably gonna keep it till end of 2007, so time will tel how good the car is long term.

They've not been around long enough to tell yet really?

I've not heard anything bad about similar versions of the engine in Fiats and Alfas though...

Mine is now just over two years old and has 61000 miles on it.

Problems with the engine..........None what so ever, it does not even use any oil between services. In the two years I have had mine, apart from the gearbox being replaced and has been pretty faultless.

its worth pointing out that Leroys is also used as a taxi so works quite hard.

Does this engine have a timing belt or chain? If belt, what mileage is it due to be changed?

Belt driven. According to Vx, change it every 10 years or 80,000 miles.
I've not heard that they're likely to snap early, unlike the Vauxhall ECOTEC petrols - *ducks for cover*...
