    Default Opinions.

Hi. First off, fantastic forum, bulging with advice!

Now, I have a dilemma and would appreciate other peoples opinions.

Years ago, I bought a Cavalier Diplomat auto, wheich was a bit of a trooper... Until the gearbox started playing up. Within weeks it no longer worked and that was the end of the Cavalier at a miserly 72k miles.

Naturally we progressed onto a Vectra B. We got a 2.0 GLS auto and for the last few years it has been problem free. Now, at 92k miles, the gearbox has started to not work properly, going into safe mode when it is cold etc, alarmingly similar to the Cavalilers demise.

A quick chat with the wife and a new car is on the books. I have my eye on a 04(04) Vectra C. 2.2 Design auto with 75K. I am loving the car but worrying about the gearbox. Is it different? Will it commit suicide like all the others and will I only get about 18mpg like my 2.0 Vectra B?

I'd love to hear a bit of experienced opinion and make my decision on that!

Cheers in advance for any help, opinions or advice!

    Mart.

I don't have an experience of Vec-Bs except as hire cars when they first came out, but drove a Cavalier Mk3 extensively when I was 17; in my opinion they were engineered to last 100,000 miles and no more. By the time you got to that mileage gearboxes were getting reluctant, seats were slowly collapsing (and as you were used to it you wouldn't notice until you sat in a new car and felt the contrast). That car came out in 1988, and the engineering work started in 1983; engineering standards are different now, and as long as the car you're looking at buying hasn't been abused and isn't a "POETS day car", then you've nothing extra to worry about in comparison to any other car you might consider buying.

i belive a few people have had problems with their auto boxes on here some have been breaking the cars jue to this, im sure someone will share there experiences with you, you can try doing a search on it sure something will come up

on the other hand many people have been trouble free, i worked in a dealer for 7 years and only ever saw 2 vec c auto boxes changed.

my 2.2 is not too bad on fuel but is manual, think there was a thread not long back on this could search that too.

A bit inconclusive then. I am toying between a Vectra and a Discovery TD5. So far it looks like the Disco is winning! I have had a variety of cars in the past, Discovery was the easiest to keep alive, just thought GM might have pulled their finger out since the terrible 4 speed auto days!
