    Default Aftermarket HIDS

Hello, without attempting to annoy anyone, when you fit hids as an after market upgrade are they are illegal? And if so what happens to your insurance etc? Also if you inform your insurance will they cover the upgrade or not?
This is'nt a dig at anyone, i was thinking of doing it myself, but having read into it then there seems to be to many cons ie no insurance cover should anything happen!!etc

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jolly

They're not illegal on projector-style lamps, but different bulbs are needed on regular reflector lamps (like the main beam ones) to comply - some sort of extra shade is needed in the fitment to prevent upward dazzle - cost about a tenner more for a pair.

As for insurance - not sure - did anyone declare all the factory options they have (like AFL, which at £800 is a touch more than a HID kit!). I only ask because most of the insurers I spoke to when buying my car said only about 50% of drivers declare factory options, even though without it the ins would only cover a standard model as replacement because what the ins doesn't know about isn't bought by them if ever a total loss occurred...

Yeah, they're illegal. You need to have light specifically designed for HIDs, the self levelling and washers fitted.

Now, the facelift lights are identical with halogens and with the factory fit non-AFL xenons (as per SVO and Elite). So you could technically retrofit the proper xenons into the existing lamps and then just add the washers. You'd need to do a little research into it, of course. I haven't had time to do it myself.

I guess that having the headlight protectors could fuss up the washer idea - mine mean I can't get the actual headlight clean - still have some salt-muck streaks tracing up them from the airflow that won't come off cos I can't find anything thin enough and flexible enough to work between cover and lamp unit.

Why are washers needed with Xenons?

Supposedly to prevent glare from dirty lenses. As much use as tits on a boar IMHO. But Europe say they must be there, so...

So the only legal option is to fiddle about with Xtreme or Nightbreaker halogens, and reset the lamps to position -2 then...

By the sounds of things, yes. Pretty poor option really cause the normal lights are garbage!!
    Looks like nightbreakers all round.

Pretty much, yes. Or plump for xenons from the factory.

The work Vectras and Octavias all have Xenons, and they're awesome when they work. The Octavia's self-levelling never works properly so you end up with one light blinding passing aircraft or illuminating manholes. The Vectra ones are much better reliability-wise, but still don't give a decent light on the road.
