Default Are You a Member of the IAM ??

I have noticed in various threads that we are priviledged to have quite a few IAM members on the site. Anything which encourages and hones one's driving skills, making drivers more safety aware, resulting in less accidents on our roads has got to be a good thing in my book.

Unfortunately, I am not a member myself.

However, I do have admiration for those that have taken the time and trouble to enhance their safety awareness even further. Its most admirable that people give up time and money to help make our roads a safer place. To all those people a big thank you.

So come on all you guys, and possibly gals who are members of the IAM, put your names on the list.... come on now... dont be shy!

I have been thinking about doing this also, as a personal development exercise

Passed my IAM bike test back in 1977 and the IAM car test in 1979.

Have they been of any use?

Nope, not a jot, waste of time. Never bothered to renew my membership since 1981.

There was a previous thread on the IAM last year (2008) with some pros and cons of being a member of IAM. Me personally, I've learnt more about driving a car by reading http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roadcraft-Gr.../dp/0113408587

EDIT - in hindsight, at the end of the day the IAM is a test (followed by membership) and since the 70's I've spent my money more wisely on advanced driver training, both for the car and the bike.

Yes. Passed both the IAM and the RoSPA test 2-3 years ago.

Found the RoSPA one more challenging, but the IAM was basically the same. My local IAM group (Lichfield) is dominated by, shall we say, the more "mature driver" and a lot of the meets are just about training new members. From my experience, there's little to keep you a member once you've passed. There was a lot of discussion over rather simply and pointless issues at many of the meets - a lot of hot air.

It's worth doing just from a personal development point of view and I'm probably a safer (or at least more aware) driver than I was before I took either test.

I passed earlier this year as our response course covers and exceeds the requirements. Doubt I'll renew but wanted to be able say I'd gained the qualification.

My Advanced Grade means I can get automatic 'examiner' status by sending in a form and a few quid.

Would never get the time to do anything with it.
