Default Looking at buying a 3.0V6 CDTi:Advice please!!!

Hi, I'm new here and looking for a bit of info.

My motoring passion is bikes, I own a 2000 Aprilia RSV Mille. It's time for a new car though, I had a 2004 Jag X-Type 2.0 which I've had nothing but hassle with and finally sold it privately. I also own a very good example of a 1991 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 8v and I have been a member over at ClubCalibra.net for some time now.

Anyway, introductions aside, I'll cut to the chase as it were.

I've decided on a Vectra CDTi. Was looking at a 1.9 SRi 150, but a 3.0 V6 CDTi has come up for sale at a local dealership.

It's a silver 2004 with 28,000 miles on the clock, one previous owner, FSH, yadda, yadda, yadda......

I've done some research on these cars online, and it looks like a more attractive proposition than the 1.9 for me personaly.

I wanted to get some info on these cars from you guys, what to look for when buying, what spec comes with these models as standard etc.

Also, not having previously owned a diesel car before, I was surprised to see that this one had covered just under 28,000 and was a 2004. Is that anything to be concerned about, or does the very fact that its a CDTi mean that its likely to have a higher mileage on it than its equivelent petrol counterpart?. From what I've seen of others of the same year and model on various dealer websites, they all have a similar mileage at that age, indeed, some have even higher miles on the clock.

Finally, this is retailing at £10,999. Is that a reasonable price?.

The dealer assures me that if I leave it too long, this car wont be there on the forecourt as they are very sought after and dont hang around when put up for sale. Could be just a sales pitch, I'm not sure.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

    RSV_Ecosse.

I would go for the 3.o v6 if only for the "growl" when you put your foot down.

The guys on here with the V6 love 'em. Being a 2004 model you'll get a lot of kit as standard that's now been removed. The price sounds pretty darn good to me and he's probably right at that price it wont be around for long.

Cheers fellas. Thanks for the nice welcome.

I appreciate what you say about the mileage, its just after looking at SRi 150 CDTi's with around 7000-10000 k on the clocks for the same cash, we were taken a bit aback by the mileage on this one.

I'm guessing its in proportion to the engine capacity though, big engines are always likely to have a larger corresponding mileage on them?

I would not say that is correct, My 3.2 had less than 4500miles on it when I bought it.

things is diesels go on for ever, like the old J family vaux engines of old. 28k for a good oil burner is just like Armoured Farmer says - run in. Most engines dont really loosen up properly till 10k anyways. the price seems about right as as said before the earlier the model the more gadgets you'll get. Also, optional extra seem to of been picked more often by those buying the 3.0 rather than the 1.9 - prob different company car brackets.

the way i see it is, if a car has 28000 miles and is 2 yrs old, thats not far off average mileage now, but it doesnt matter whether it petrol, diesel, 3 litre or 1 litre its still done 28000 miles, but the diesel will probably prove its worth in later years and the 3l will be more fun than a 1l lol -
    ps welcome

Welcome to the site mate, you cant go wrong with the 3.0CDTI, loads of power in standard trim and with a tuning box on they are awesome, I average around 38mpg with mine with a tuning box fitted(thankyou ABYSS). Lots of spec on the 04 model that was removed in 05 and later. Mileage is high for year but not a problem with these engines as you aren't likely to wear it out unless you intend to keep it until its done 250,000, see if you can knock another £1000 off the price, use milage as a bargaining tool in your favour, but at the price youv'e put it's still a bargain.
You won't be dissapointed, well not until you see my 3.0 Signum
