    Question Cracked Windscreen!

    Hi Chaps,
I had a small (less than 5cm) crack in my window that I have been meaning to get fixed for the past few weeks but never did!

Anyway this morning on way to work (at an impressive -6 degrees) the not so small crack/chip decided to *enlarge* and as a result my windscreen crack is now almost the complete width of the screen! Right across the middle
(Was quite impressive to see it happening as I was driving to be honest!)

It didnt impair my driving (only had about 5mins of my journey left), but I was worried that the crack would extend another 10cm and then shatter the whole screen.

Called Autoglass and I have it covered on my insurance (with an excess to pay of course!) so its getting replaced today, and the guy even said the current manufacturer glass I have fitted is shatterproof and that it is safe to drive........
Sounds good, but not sure how true it is - Anyone unfortunate enough to prove or disproved this claim?

    Cheers,

The windscreen should be laminated, that is Two pieces of glass with a plastic membrane in between them, so the windscreen should not "fall apart".

Cheers Ed - Hopefully all will be well as I need to drive it only a further 5 miles to get it replaced today

....Well a new windscreen should inspire me to also get a Irmscher grille ordered and fitted too and get me thinking about some other easy mods

Mine has virtually the exact same problem, a crack almost the width of the screen and about a 1/4 up from bottom, the screen is laminated as you can feel the crack on the outside but nothing on the inside. I was quite suprised how cheap glass is for these cars. The best quote Ive got is £88 plus vat fitted or £100 plus vat fitted for one with top tint as I don't have windscreen cover on my insurance. I've heard of bills going into the hundreds of pounds when done through insurance although you obviously only pay for the excess. Makes you wonder whats going on!

The screen will never totally shatter from just a crack , you can have a cracked screen for months with no problem .
This really pi5535 me off as it's all down to "gavin" from autoglass trying to scare people into having there screens repaired , true a chip can run into a crack - but a crack isn't the end of the world as far as driver safety goes .

    Cheers all.
Autoglass also confirmed the "shatterproof" windscreen & just as well really as I took it in y-day expecting a shiny new windscreen, but they called me within 15mins after I left saying they didnt have the veccy screen with the top blue tint. Urgh!
Anyway, its booked in today so should be sorted & hopefully no new cracks will appear on my drive into get it sorted.....
