Smile A chance in a million....

    Following on from this thread

    http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66125

I went into the garage at the end of my road, this is a little village garage and was telling him that the fault after Tech2 was EGR valve with insufficient swirl!

I took the egr out and cleaned it but to no avail, I did notice however that the black housing was loose and the two clips that held the main black plastic bit on were broken. The egr also made an awfull noise when first started for a couple of minutes.

Anyway... I was asking advice from the mechanic, ie new, secondhand etc when his colleague overheard and asked.. "is it diesel". Well yes I said and he came over and told me about the nightmare he had after buying a new EGR valve and it wasn't the problem. It turned out his Throttle butterflys had siezed causing the EGR fault to illuminate on Tech2.

Long story short.... he had the EGR taken out from his car just before christmas and was about to ebay it. Price new from VX is £310 inc vat. So he said I could try it and see if it fixes the problem.

Well I gave it a clean and fitted it and by jove it works car has full power restored with no warning lights on.

Now what are the chances of popping to your local village garage to have a moan and he has a working second hand EGR valve for the same model of car!!!!!

I asked what he wanted and a deal was struck at £50 better than £310.

    A happier Jon

Its something that runs along the front of the engine underneath the EGR valve. One per cylinder apparently and they can carbon up and stick!

Not sure exactly what they are but they have butterflies or flaps on them.

I think you will always get a better sevice from the likes of the village garage. Their "reputation" is what keeps them alive.

I might have to do this soon, see if it makes any difference. Been thinking about taking the engine apart and cleaning for a few weeks now. Will wait for the weather to heat up and the light to last longer tho...
