Damp in house - advise?

Hi,
I've got an end terraced house, and I get a bit of damp in really bad rain.

The water seems to get down the cavity of the wall and cause damp down the 'end edge' of the house (end terraced edge).



I tried getting some wall injection insulated last year, but the British Gas engineer said I couldn't get it done because it was a stone wall, and not a brick wall - and the cavity may have rubble - and if they put insulation in, it will cause air pockets and make the damp occur.


I got a new roof about 6 months ago, so I know the water isn't getting in through there, but the end of the house could do with new pointing (had a quote for... a LOT of ££ so can't afford that without a loan.)


Does anyone know what I can do, or if I can get any type of damp proofing or insulation in the cavity??

You can get a water proofing spray for the bricks, but have no idea if its any good or what it costs. Could be a short trem soloution unless its crap! anyone know?

Where is the damp? Is it ground floor around the skirting board and upwards or on the first floor?

If ground floor then it most likely is down to bad pointing and only repointing is going to cure that. Rain will be getting through the cracks and running down the inside of the outer wall and collecting at the bottom. It could also be a knackered damp course though.

If its first floor then although pointing will be an issue, i would suggest you get your roof rechecked. I say this as if you have a cavity wall then the rain coming through the pointing would have to "jump" the cavity to the interior wall. It's more likely its getting under the eaves and coming in through the top of the cavity in this case

all brick's stones are very pourus, if you say you need pointing doing then you have hit one point, the other thing as said is to spray ''THOMPSON'S WATER SEAL'' on the entire wall to stop it soaking so much when it rain's.....

we used to get damp in one of the bedrooms, but that's cleared up since we got the roof sorted.

We just noticed the damp today when we decided to move the furniture around.

Its at the bottom of the wall, near the skirting board. When we first moved in, we noticed the damp patches down the walls from top to bottom, but it went when the roof was sorted, but now it's back at the bottom of the wall.

just a thought but have you looked under them to see if you are getting any puddleing ????

thats a good idea. haven't done that because it'd be a big job moving stuff and getting the carpet up, but i may do that when i've got a spare day.

got a mate who was suffering with damp in his kitchen, lifted his floorboard's to find a 3 ft void half full of water, fitted a sump pump and conected it to a drain outside, this solved his problem.....
