    Default Coolant Leak???

Been having problems over the last few months with having to top up the coolant on a regular basis. Every couple of weeks the radiator light appears on the dash and I have to top up with around 1 - 2 cm in the expansion tank. Generally topping up with antifreeze.
I have taken into my local friendly vx dealer who apparently did a pressure test but could find no leaks (oh..and charged me £40 for the pleasure!)

There is obviously a leak somewhere, have checked myself but cannot find anything. Is there any obvious places I should check? Any ideas?

    PS. It's a pre facelift 2.2DTI

Default mine has the same problem

i've been having the same problem and have to top up every 6-8 wks when levels drop by 2-3 cms in the expansion tank. can't be the radiator as no telltale signs seen. it is not the heat exchanger for the heater in the cabin as i can't get the coolant smell in the cabin. that leaves the expansion chamber & head gasket. no telltale signs on the engine oil cap cover of coolant mixing with engine oil. so i am at a wits end to find the cause

it could be the heater core .leaking under the carpet and some times they dont give off a smell .....but i would bet money on the oil cooler on the front of the engine ...

    Default oil cooler ?

Where is the oil cooler? Wading through the forums here on coolant leak, I've found powdery residue where the hose pipe joins the engine on the right of engine bay. Is this the suspect area ?

if it is leaking that much water you would still have a wet stain and not a dry one the powder area is worth checking tho ..the oil cooler is attached to the lower half of the oil filter houseing ... have you had a look at the water pump area ?

I had my 2.8TV6 in at the stealers for a coolant leak a couple of months back. The leak was from where the hose clipped onto the expansion tank, so they ordered a new tank and new hoses.

I noticed last week when I was checking the crash damage that I'd got the same leak again exactly the same place, but the coolant level was still OK.

Have you had the coolant sniff tested for combustion gases?

Have you tried a leak sealing additive for the coolant?

I had a similar problem a few months ago - it turned out I hadn't fully tightened the expansion cap......
I changed my cambelt last month, and at the same time changed the water pump. There were very slight signs of a leak from the pump, and there was a lot of play in the impellor shaft.

Any powdery residue is worth checking out.
