    Default Expensive Noise?

    Hi All.

My CDTI 150 Auto is making a loud swishing noise when started from cold- disappears after car is driven and warms up. Any ideas at all, I'm wondering about a bearing somewhere...

Also, car has now done c72,000 miles. Anyone know how far these engines usually go without major problems? It's had the usual EGR work done.

    Thanks again for any help

This may sound daft - but is it like a wooooooo noise!! lol?? Almost like the start of a police car siren or something?? But when the turbo actually boosts slightly further up the rev range (goes into positive preasue) it goes and you get the standard sucking noise?

If so its where the Turbo bearings are cold and they make this noise, quite normal for a turbo to do that- its quite a small compressor also on the CDTI's.

My previous Saab 9000 ran a large Turbo, and peaked at 1.8 bar preasure, and this too did the same - only slightly louder than my CDTI..

The water pumps can be very noisy when cold until they are warmed up on high mileage cars. Although there is no specific time scale for changing the water pump, I have been advised by Vauxhall technical that they should be looked at with a review to renewing at about 60,000 miles. If the bearing goes, it will take out the came balt.

But this is not the end of the world on the 1.9 CDTi 150, if the belt goes, normally you just brake a few rockers and not destroy the engine.

Try filling the tank, on my Skoda it makes this noise when the tank is low or no more than half full, what it actually is is the fuel pump priming itself, not sure if it's the same on a CDTi, but it's the cheapest rule out I can think of before you look for other things.

quite loud noises of this kind are usually a loose or split boost hose or as a friend had a small hole in the intercooler rad! mine is not noisey at all except feint boost a whistle from the turbo.
