    Default Short Number Plates

To any of you with cut/shortened number plates,
did you cut the regular size plates yourselves or get them made somewhere? My plate is 5 digits and i think it'd be pretty cool shortened. Any thoughts?

I thought about doing this (I've also got five characters) but upon checking found out it's illegal - DVLA publish sizes of plates to be used. The only car dispensation seems to be for some Jap personal imports, which have too small a recess in the bodywork/bumper.
You'd struggle to find a UK plate supplier willing to do you a short plate, but I think you can have virtually anything made up for you via the internet (in Eire for example).
Cutting them down yourself? I'm not sure as they really should have rounded corners.
I made sure the characters are absolutely central on my plates and didn't bother with the blue UK thingie. I think they look very smart with lots of plain yellow/white either side of the lettering.

last time i checked, there was no law regarding the size of the actual plate - only the lettering... the only thing affecting the size of the plate is that there has to be blank space between the edge of the letter and the edge of the plate (i can't remember the minimum legal requirement of that space)
Oh, and the letters have to be a certain size (height and width) and they have to have a certain size spacing between each letter.

    i hope this makes sense....

I think you might be right. I've just looked through the DVLA site and all dimensions are specified - except the overall size of the plates.

I miss the old silver on black ones, they looked really sharp, until Mr Killjoy decided no more.

You can't shorten plates without without getting pulled and a "friendly word in your ear". Had some slightly larger back ones made to fit the Signum hole better. My plates 5 figures and I think they look OK.

My best mate's dad is a police officer, he's told me as long as the letters are the correct font, size and spacing etc, it doesnt matter about the size of the plate itself, after all only blank bits of white and yellow plate are being removed and it doesn't really affect the legibility of the characters.

And Big Davie, cheers for the tip about the place in Partick, I'll check it out mate!

I had short plates on my old car. They are perfectly legal to buy and fit, as long as, as others have said, the spacing and font of the lettering is correct. My private plate has 5 digits so the smaller plate looked so much better.
