    Default Hand Brake Query

Fitted new Ferodo Premier rear pads to my 55 Reg Vectra C 1.8 Club Hatch early November as old ones had done 28.6K miles and were getting ready...everything went OK...remembered to 'Wind-in' the pistons to take 'em back into the caliper etc.after reading the relevant threads on here....thanks bye the way..., so I could slide in the new pads....However just recently and after getting through its first MOT ok., the handbrake is acting strangely even though the recall mod was done in April 2008.

Most of the time it seems well adjusted when I apply the handbrake...especially when I use the footbrake to assist as Vxhl recommend...but occasionally I have to pull it all the way upto the stop but it still feels as if it's not fully on.

Question is......where is the auto adjusting mechanism located...is it at the handbrake lever end or at the caliper end???

In the old days as I remember this auto self adjustement consisted of a toothed cam and ratchet set-up on the rear brake cylinder operating arms, but when I did the pad change I don't remember seeing anything resembling this at all....

Any comments would be much appreciated...

    Thanks

Sounds like you have a sticky handbrake lever on the caliper itself. When you let the handbrake off, it doesn't spring off and release the handbrake properly, therefore next time you apply the handbrake, it feels like it's going through the sunroof. That brake will bind at the same time too btw so check the pads and disc on that side for signs of overheating (disc braking surface usually goes blueish and the edges and centre boss go an orange colour). Auto Adjust

    Vauxhall definition :
    To use your thumb

I've never found the auto adjusters to be much use (Vectra B, Mondeo Mk3, Vectra C)
At every service I check the handbrake afterwards, and in most cases return and ask them to readjust it so that it is back to less than three clicks

My memory is rusty, it will be either a hole in the drum to adjust with a small screwdriver, or under the handbrake there is a nut to adjust the cable.

Must learn to read posts fully. I didn't read the bit where it says it's a 1.8 club . In which case, VV is correct, take the wheel off and line up the hole in the drum with the adjuster inside. No need to touch the cables unless they are stretched
