Cool My Other 'Hobby' - PC Building...

Ok, seeing as it's been a while in the making, I thought it was only fair to post a few pics of my now (mostly) finished creation. It started off in September last year when attempting to do some video editing on my computer for a freind, when I started getting unbelievably frustrated by the time it was taking to do anything. I had a fair idea about computers, and decided I needed some more RAM to give it more breathing space. It was at this point (when I went into a shop...) I discovered there was an awful lot of types of memory...

So, I began researching to find out exactly what I needed, and the more I read the more I began to think that maybe an upgrade wasn't what I needed... My computer used DDR RAM, which was now becoming quite expensive due to DDR2. Despite the fact that I'd bought my new Vectra the month before, I decided I would build my own one from scratch. (Computer, not Vectra....)

Initially I concentrated on the main components and the Operating System, and read through a million magazines (mainly Custom PC...) and online reviews to decide what the best was I could afford. After a few weeks of study, I ordered my components and then set about building it.

I was suprised to discover just how simple it was, and compared to the prices in the major stores it wasn't that expensive. This is when it becomes clear that the market isn't really there when you can build them yourself, unlike laptops. You have to buy a laptop (realisitcally) in the shops, so there's much more of a competitive market...

My study further revealed to me the art of water-cooling and PC modding, and my mind set to work on how to accomplish something impressive that would feed my creative hunger... this is why I used to love lego I think - I enjoy building thigns and doing stuff with my hands...

Initial experiments with water-cooling proved useful, although I wouldn't fully adopt it for another 6 months or so due to my original case jsut not being anywhere near big enough to do what I wanted. After various component upgrades and system tweaks, I have no wired and plumbed everything into place, and for now the project is finished. With me needing to save as much money as possible in the next 7 months for when I leave the RAF, and the thing being obscenely large and heavy, it is remaining at my parent's house as the start of me moving all my belongings from north Scotland to Preston, ready for my new life.

    Specs:

Case: Silverstone TJ07 Black with Window
    Motherboard: Asus Blitz Formula LGA775
    CPU: Intel Core 2 E8400 3.0GHz overclocked to 3.8GHz
    Memory: 8GB Corsair Dominator 8500 DDR2
    Graphics: Nvidia 9600GT factory overclocked
Hard Drives: Total 1.5TB with space for two more

    Water-cooled CPU, Northbridge and graphics

Screen on the front displays almost anything you want, from CPU temps and speed to a news feed...

Second reservoir on the front has a UV LED in it to light up the fluid, but it's not very bright...

    Behold...

The initial layout first the first incarnation was about 800 squid, and over the past year I've upgraded most of the components and sold the old ones, and gradually bought the water-cooling and modding parts, but i think the biggest single outlay was the case itself...

The thing is, it runs absolutely the same as it would if it wasn't water-cooled and in a normal case - i just enjoy making things...

Nice. Respect for the lovely quality silverstone case!

I've just finished building my latest rig myself. I'll post pics up when I can drag it out from under the desk. Specs are:

    Antec 900 Case
    XFX 790i Intel Motherboard
Intel QX9650 Quad Core Extreme Processor
    8 gb Corsair DDR2 8500 memory
3 BFG GTX 280 gfx cards in triple SLI
    2 300gb VelociRaptor drives in RAID 0
2 1tb Western digital RE3 SATA drives, also in RAID 0

All held together by a Tagan Piperock 1100watt PSU

Yes, completely overboard and overkill, but i thought that the likelyhood of getting another payoff from a divorce was unlikely so might as well build a dream rig whilst i had the cash!

As the kit cost a little over £3k itself, I wasn't brave enough to try and watercool it all like Penfold. I'd be paranoid and constantly listening for "Drip, Drip, Drip"

That's one way to blow it.... Suprised to you didn't hold out for a new Core i7 setup if you had that much cash to blow...

And as for the watercooling, you just have to be very careful and very patient...
