    Default Battery problems

hi all. a few weeks ago i was having battery problems and ended up buying a new one. this morning i went out to the car and the new one is dead again. i`m just wondering does anyone have exp in this happening to themselves? is it a duff battery? alternator? electrical fault in car? i have a multi meter and am going to go out and do a few tests. so if someone tell me what voltage`s i should be getting that would be great. ..finally one last thing where/ how can i test my alternator?

Put all your electrics on "ie" lights heated screen everthing. The reading from the meter you put on the battery should still show a charge. Switch of everything and the battery should show about 14 volts.

Have you checked the earth wire and all the conections. You might have one that is loose. Or you might have a short somewhere ( though I doubt that is the problem). Might sound daft but are all the interior lights going out when the door is shut. Also fold the rear seat down when the boot is closed to see if the boot light is stuck on.

tbh i checked this after reading other posts, my boot light is defo off, glove box is 90% of (think if i bent the door any more trying to see it would break, the switch is working tho) and the interior light is never on ( i have it set to not come on with open doors etc)

I wonder if a faulty alternator could send the battery to "ground" and in effect short it out??. Even if the readings from the battery indicate the alternator is charging, I wonder if it could discharge the battery when the engine is switched off.
