Default Thoughts on Blu-ray Players/Films. Is it worth it or not?

I'm one of those people who tends to buy many of the latest gadgets, more money than sense perhaps, though I blame it on having a depraved childhood.

I have a DVD collection probably in the region of 350-400 films, however, over the last year I have started replacing some of my favourite films with Blu-Ray versions which I used to play on my PS3.
Recently I bought the Sony BDP-S350 +6 Blu-Ray film package from Blockbusters so we didn't have to keep carrying the PS3 from my study into the lounge. Just lately I've been spending a fair amount of money building up my Blu-Ray library of discs, mostly from Eb*y and Pl*y.com etc.

Due to the costs involved and the fact that I allready have most of the films already on standard DVD format anyway, I am beginning to doubt the sanity of what I've been doing. After all, even a standard DVD looks quite good after its been upscaled by the Sony player, and though its still not quite as good as Blu-ray, they do look pretty good.

This morning a moment of sanity returned, and I'm starting to think about what I'm doing. What prompted this, was that I was about to order a large screen HD projector from Play.com, merely because my son has one, stupid idea really, though it did look good. (I just dont need one...lol)

IOW. Are we all being ripped off...

Whats your thoughts on Blu-ray, are you replacing your old DVD's, or restricting Blu-ray buys to just new films or perhaps you regard it as a complete waste of money.

So far I've mainly restricted myself to buying new titles on BR and replacing about 25 of my favourite films.

Yes the films do look good, but is that little extra defination worth all the money we are spending.

I'd say if you have a TV big enough to make use of it (and the living room to sit far enough away from it...) and the film has something about it that makes it worth watching in HD (ie, Transformers...) then yes. You wouldn't buy a TV now WITHOUT HD, because that's the way the world is going. It would be like buying a new VCR just because you have a large collection of things on tape - ok you can watch them, but was it worth investing in a new one...

So, if you're buying a new TV anyway, then it makes sense to get the best you can afford with HD, and then gradually build up the Blu-ray player and disc collection...

Buying it all for the sake of it, however, does seem a bit expensive...

I have a blu-ray player hooked up to my 48" Plasma mounted on the wall. The picture quality is fantastic. It really comes into its own when watching animated films. Get one, you'll be glad you did. I was

I've got 50" Sony TV. The picture using a HDMI DVD player is excellent. I've been seriously thinking about a Panasonic BD55. But is the improvement in the picture quality worth £300???

Not seen the Pansonic BD55, but I can say the Sony BDP-S350 is a good unit especially now prices have come down a bit, the Sony 550 is aslo very good, both have had excellent rightups, with good feedback in the Avforums.

My only reservation, is the expense of switching over one's movie collection to Blu-ray, Its starting to cost serious money...lol

Have you ever bought something, knowing before hand that you are doing the wrong thing, but you still go ahead and buy it regardless, only to later prove to yourself that your initial reasons for not buying were completely justified...lol Well.. thats me! I do it all the time. IYKWIM.

I don't see the point. If the system you have is broken then fine, but where would it end?
    3.2 v6 Signum and loving it 😁
