    Default Warranty Clauses

Please forgive me if im ignorant on some points here but im no mechanic. My 56 Reg 1.9 CDTi 37000 miles, broke down about 6 weeks ago. Had it towed to a VX stealers. I had the servicing done at 2 different garages, but i didnt have my log book stamped as i only found it again a few months ago. I had both Invoices for the services. VX are now trying to say that because i dont have reciepts for the actual parts ie filters ect... that where used in the servicing my warranty is invalid. I have never heared of anybody getting reciept for parts from a garage, all ive ever known is an invoice. Is it me or do i get the feeling VX are trying to get out of paying for repairs to under warranty cars at any chance to save money to save there jobs instead of honouring the warranty contracts they sell with the vehicles? I'll post more details of whats actually up with the car when i go to the garage later. As far as i know it needs a new engine so i'm lookin at nearly 4k for a car thats worth 4500 at the most :-/

They will want to know if VX parts had been used, as it invalidates the warranty if not.

The EU Block exemption regulations were supposed to free up the monopoly OEMs had whilst the car is in warranty by allowing an owner to have a car serviced at any garage as long as OE or OE quality parts (i.e Lucas, Bosch etc..) were used and the service was done in line with manufacturers guidelines.

Some garages such as Nationwide Autocentres will guarantee this (if you specify that OE guidelines are followed). Unfortunately without documentary evidence VX are in their rights to refuse a warranty claim.

i would have thought that the invoice would list parts used? i don't think i've ever had a service invoice that just says 'labour£x, parts £y, total = £z', it usually itemises the parts?
i would get to the places that you used for these services and get plead with them to write out a retro-invoice, hopefully showing the part numbers of the,.....er......genuine parts they fitted. if you get my drift.

All the invoice says is "HALFORDS OIL FILTER" ect.... no item numbers just a price, the garage has gone bust. Ive spoke to halford who have been excellent but the Brick Wall that is VX customer services have a faceless person who keeps saying no. i'll post the report from the garage later with some pics i got. cheers for all the advice and i'd already quoted B.E.R. 2003.

if the garage has gone bust, a slightly less than honest person could mock up an invoice using excel, for instance, that showed all genuine parts with the numbers, and vx couldn't check back and disprove it.
only a slightly dishonest person could do that, we couldn't condone that at all though??

Interesting as i had to have a new engine in mine under warranty. My service book was stamped but not all of them were VX dealers. Never asked for proof of parts at all. Just got on with the job. Think you need to talk to VX customer services

Peter Griffin: Ah, c'mon, Lois, isn't 'bribe' just another word for 'love'?

Can you try a different Stealer, as I suspect some will be more relaxed on the issue than others

Sorry to hear this.. not good at all! Its unfortunate the garage went bust, maybe worth considering Marks sugestion.. ;-)

I've noticed myself from past experience that one often gets more isues over warranty repairs when the vehicle has not been serviced by a proper dealer, even when the servicing garage had stamped the book and used genuine parts.

Its one of the reasons, especially now most vehicles have higher milages between official service periods, that maybe makes it a bit more prudent to pay a little more at a VX dealership. Especially as cars seem to be getting more complicated these days.

I remember having a gearbox oil seal problem on a BMW car I had which was about 2 months outside its warranty, but the BMW dealer still did the work absolutely free because all the servicing had been done there.
Obviously depends on whether one gets a good or bad dealer, but for the sake of probably just a couple hundred quid difference over 3 years its a small price I'm willing to pay.
