    Default Opinions, advise, thoughts please.....

Apologies in advance for the longish post but I was wondering if I could ask for some views please?

My wife and I currently have three cars between us. A little indulgent you might say and this is the dilemma. Should we sell one or keep all three?

They are all paid for so no finance issues other than ongoing upkeep costs.

I am self-employed and the nature of my work is such that I need to do about 40k miles a year self financed and need a large estate type car to carry all the kit I need. My wife works full time and needs a car for her 35 mile a day commute.

The current "stable" is as follows -

Vauxhall Signum 2.2 petrol Direct Design 53 plate 45k miles
Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 diesel Ghia X 51 plate 155k miles
Ford Ka 04 plate 21k miles

While not a hard and fast rule the Signum being the "poshest" in terms of its condition tends to be used for "best" and the other two as workhorses.

The Mondeo has been a fabulous car. I have had it since it was quite young both in age and miles and it has never had a single fault. It is, however, now getting on in years and miles and may have an unpleasant surprise or two to spring on me. It is nigh on worthless which can be regarded as a positive as it can't really depreciate a great deal more.

I bought the Signum earlier this year because it seemed like a bit of a bargain but of course they are even cheaper now. It is also a very good car and with the fuel price differential doesn't cost any more to run than the diesel Mondeo.

The Ka has been owned by us from new and has also been faultless.

Neither of us can afford to be without transport. In my case it would be very costly not to be able to travel to visit my customers and in my wife's case the lack of suitable public transport would be a major problem.

So my questions to the forum are,

Should I just carry on as I am running all three?

Should I sell the Mondeo before it lets me down and be grateful for its years of faultless excellent service?

Should I sell the Ka because that might be easier to shift and would still have some value?

Should I sell the Signum because although it's a nice car it might still be attractive enough to raise a bit of cash?

    What would you do ?

Unless you need the money I'd keep them all! Me and the bird have my Signum for "posh" (LOL) and her KA for commuting to town and anywhere really local, as its tiny and can park in the smallest of spaces and is quite nippy at low speed its perfect for her...

Well, that's the thing. We don't "need" the money at present but of course in the current ecomomic climate who can say what even the short term future holds ?

But like you said... If one of the cars "die" then you'd still have one to fall back on so you can still work... I wouldnt trust the Ford for much longer LOL

Hmmm. Well the Mondeo could well cost you something in the future due to it's mileage but who can predict that? Unless the cost of tax and insurance is crippling you why not simply run the Mondeo until it does go wrong. As you say it is prob worth very little but you would have to spend a sizeable amount more to secure a car you could trust to not break down.

I think if it isn't broken don't fix it. These cars aren't the solution to credit crunch woes. But then what do I know, I drive a 3.0 CDTi.

Personally, I'd drive the Mondeo into the ground, although only in terms of mileage. If you keep the Signum for the longterm why have two cars with high mileage. Put as many miles on the ford before it can't take anymore. As you say its worthless, If you put the mileage on the signum it won't long before you go from low to high mileage on it!
You could argue sell the Signum for now put the miles on the Modeo and when modeo goes buy another Signum although i feel you'd probably loose out selling your Signum then buying something else.

As another option how about selling the Signum privately, get the cash. Then trade in the mondeo you'd be in a good position to buy something else...theres good deals about at the moment...you did mention you liked the look of the Jag's when you delivered the TravelAssistant!

In my opion I would sell the one of the cars off, to save on running costs, tyre and wear on car, maintance, road tax, insurance, etc..

Especially with the market at the moment....
