    Default Handbrake twanging noise

OK, some of the time when I apply the handbrake I get a twanging noise from the handbrake lever/assembly inside the car. Often if I reapply it, it does not do it again but occasionally it does.

This all started after it want in for the handbrake spring recall work. Since then I mentioned this when it went in for a service and they added another spring but it still does it and it is p*ssing me orff. Any ideas?

For info, when I took the car in and mentioned this the service bloke said that I should not be depressing the release button as I pull up the handbrake - and this could be causing it. Firstly, it never did it before the spring mod, and secondly, is it BS about not depressing the button - sounds really crap pulling the lever up with it clicking away!!

    Cheers
    Mark

Please let us know how you get on, however, there is no problem with the handbrake efficiency once on so I am not sure MOT would flag it??

What I really want to do is have a look under the plastic and see what is causing the noise.

    Cheers,

An official recall for the twanging noise - not heard about that one yet. Any more details?

Mine does it. It did stop for a while when I change the rear pads, but now it is back again.

I think it is rear brake adjustment, and there is a thread about it on here somewhere. I'll add that to my Christmas holiday work list.

Yes mine does this same noise although I would say more of a "Cracking Bang!".

I want to get this Plastic sleeve off the handle, cus I sure there's something loose inside that? I taken off the centre concul, but can't remove the Handbrake Plastic cover, because it needs to side off the handle, but the soft plastic cover is preveninting it from coming off completely? Ducan recons that the silver button "Pops Off" but I can't seem to shift it, without breaking somethink?

Do you think the problem lies inside the handbreak lever, or is it something to do with the handbreak adjustment at the rear wheels? Save me ripping appart this handle to find nothing is wrong????

Yes, twang/banging noise. To me it sounds as if the cable is not adjusted properly, and now and again the slack gets caught as the handbrake is pulled up, where at some point the cable slips back to its proper position with a twang/bang. It is also funny that many complain that this was not an issue before the handbrake recall was done......

Was it easy getting the console off. I want to have a look myself but have not got around to it yet.

Hi Spatch, yes i thought it was the cable thing, but I've been under the car, and can't see anything slipping or signs of anything loose at either wheel or handbrake ends of the cable. So convinced its in the handbrake lever itself? The console comes out really easly, remove the center drinks holder or in my case a rollcover thingy, then undo the single torx screw found under there up in the corner, then while sat in rear, remove the cigar lighter/power socket panel, unclip the rear panel down to carpet level, your then see two more torx screws holding centre console to the floor, but first you have to undo 4 larger torx bolts which hold the arm rest and lift that away first, then the centre console can be lifted away with ease. My problem is I can't get the plastic cover off the actual handbrake lever because of this soft plastic grip, preventing it from slipping off the handle? If you have any ideas as to how to get this item off, I'd be interested? I thought there was a small grub screw underneath, but can't really decide if theres one or not? if so its very small??? Purhapes someone on hear can confirm?

Thanks Paul for the info. I may have a look. However, since this has started since the recall work was done then I think it should go back to the dealer. This is always a hassle though, and costs me diesel and my time etc. so sometimes easier just to have a go yourself..
