It's not an automatic box is it?
no it isnt a automatic box
water leak or head gasket, does the car put out a lot of white smoke?
It might pay to have a check for combustible products in the coolant. Just about any garage with have the sniffer kit for this. It will tell you if the cylinder head gasket has gone or not (most probably anyway).
Have you checked for engine running and engine stopped leaks when hot and when cold?
Had this problem in my Vec-B for a while. Couldn't figure out where it was going to, then attributed it to a slight weep on a connection where the pipes for the heater go through the bulkhead to the cabin. No white smoke or water in the oil.
A few weeks later the head gasket went properly and started pushing the coolant out of the header tank through the overflow, still no white smoke or water in the oil though. So the coolant loss was an early warning the gasket was failing.
As a quick test, when the engine is warm take the top off the header tank and start the car to see if it's blowing bubbles into the tank. Alternatively have someone do a sniffer test to see if combustion gases are getting into the header tank.
Take action anyway so you don't wind up like me, stranded in Shrewsbury late at night.........
thanks for the warning i have just had cam belt renewed could this be anything to do with the water leaval.
no not got any white smoke.
