Default How can you tell if .....

    Gents,

How can you tell if you have soggy or duff suspension by the feel of the car wen driving??

Recently my motor has been feeling a tad strange (not sure how much of this is in my mind) sometimes the steering feels very twitchy and going over a bump often feels like the car will move diagonally or has been thrown sideways slightly!! I am at the point of upgrading the shocks all round - am I right to do this or is it something silly I have overlooked.

    Cheers

    Joules.

To check the shocks, press down on each corner in turn. The car should rise, fall and settle in a smooth action. If it bounces or sticks/judders then the shocks are fooked. HTH

Cheers Rushy. I will check that tomorrow.

What if all the shocks check out, then what would it point to? I did check the clearance on the front, one side is four fingers the other is four and a bit if that makes any sense! It was on flat gound when I checked.

Get it up on stands and get the wheels off, and just check all the coils are intact. I'm sure Mark mentioned that if heavy loads are carried the rears can become a bit saggy. Other than that check all bushes. TBH think the rear is a poor design which is properly why the put so much camber on them to help it stick.

Had a play around with the suspension, all round seems firm and even. I opened the boot to test the rears and there is a knocking sound from the rear left side when bounced, and slightly from the right.

Looks like rear control arms, which I will order today

Thanks Rushy for suggesting the shock test.

    Sorry post not very clear.

All the shocks seem fine. The noise was from the boot lifter, I mistook that for the rear support arms.

Still looking for the cause of the intermittent unsettled feeling when driving, gonna get it ramped over Xmas break and check all the suspension.

Starting to think it might be the tyres...

I think i know what you mean. I've been saying for a little while that mine seems a little twitchy. Almost feels like it's pulling to one side on the slightest slope / gradient. I'm getting mine serviced soon and asking them to check absolutely everything so i'll let you know how they get on mate.

Do you by any chance have 225/45/17 on the rear. I found when I put the wider tyres on the back mine became a bit jittery. Lowering my pressures sorted it. I run 38 in the front and about 34 in the rear to help make it more docile.
