Thumbs up What a difference a new EGR can make!

My 55 plate 1.9 CDTi (150) SRi with 57000 miles, started misbehaving about a week ago but the reality is a lot longer, more like a year upon reflection.

About 12 months ago the engine performance got lumpy, sort of like a loose engine mount bracket is the only way to describe it, every time I lifted the accelerator the engine would lurch, I just put it down to wear and tear!.

The car smoked when booting it off the lights, very noticeable at night in the lights of the car behind me. (Probably why I always managed to pull off faster than anybody else!, they couldn't see for the smoke! ).

The car started to sound like a massey ferguson when ticking over.

The revs used to hunt occasionally at tick over.

It just seemed less powerful and hesitant.

Then last week the power just died below 2000rpm and I couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding with this car.

The dreaded spanner light started to come on!!!

So, what did I do?, go straight to the stealers?, NO!!!

Come and visit the very good and informative Vecta-C.com again.

From here it was soon apparent that the problem was with the EGR valve and in the HOW to, the details for a replacement from AUTOVAUX (btw. I have updated the part number in the discussion thread.).

This I ordered Yesterday morning (Monday) and it arrived at work Today (Tuesday), Went for special delivery option.

Half an hour later during my lunch break and all was done, as for the old valve, talk about carbon, well I've been doing my bit for the environment by storing lots and lots of carbon inside my EGR valve!!!.

    So the drive home.......

BLIMEY!!!!!!!! ITS LIKE A NEW CAR!!!!!

All the above problems have vanished and the power delivery is smooth and powerful, I had to really be careful on the slippery back lanes as the wheels just wanted to spin!!!.

So if you have the above symptoms, don't go to the stealers, just replace the valve yourself. It's dead easy.

And thank you everyone who posted on vectra-c forums describing their symptoms and what they did to cure the faults.

Also hopefully, this post might help others.

Erm if your car was playing up 12 months ago your car would have still been under warranty.
3 years or 60K which ever is sooner.
It can only be a few months outside warranty now cannot it not?
Do you have it serviced at the dealers?

Yep, it was still under warranty, but the stealer could not find anything wrong with it!!, and I did have it serviced at VX dealers whilst still under warranty.

It's out of warranty now (Thank god), cheaper days at last!!!.

BTW, I have always done my own maintenance / repairs on every car I have owned inc. engine rebuilds etc.

The EGR valve was £85 plus another £3 ish for the gasket, the special delivery was £15, but this time of year and I wanted the part urgently!!!.

So you might think expensive!. But not so!, a day out of work would have cost me approx £140 plus with it being out of warranty, I hate to think of the cost at the stealer's on top of that.

Plus the most important bit, the sheer satisfaction of diagnosing and fixing the problem yourself..... PRICELESS!!!

One last thing I have noticed from reading posts on this forum.
Most repairs if not unambiguously diagnosed on the computer are hit and miss, this is where the stealer replaces a part, charges you for it an extortionate price then finds it does nothing to solve the problem.
Then they TRY the next part, again charging you loads etc etc.

Sorry, but most dealer engineers are just technicians these days (Sorry to all the genuine knowledgeable engineers out their, I know what it's like being dumped into the same category!), and all they do is replace until fixed!. Well, we can all do that, just it's considerably cheaper if one does this on ones own.

    Anyone else agree with this!.

Anyhow s. if GM collapse, we may be forced to do the work ourselves, so this is where Vectra-C.com may yet end up being a lifeline for many owners.

Yep, I agree, I may have missed the problem whilst still under warranty, but the stealers won't fix it unless they can find it, but hopefully my experience may help out others!!. And yep, it did end well, BIG GRIN ON FACE WELL

(BTW, the air con fan not blowing on anything except 3 on pre facelift vectra c's may not be the resistor module in the foot well, but a relay!. Hope this helps someone).

Yep, with you on the technicians! I have found the problem on this site and gone to the stealers with the info and found out that I know more than them. Mind you I also have TIS and EPC so that helps as well. The annoying thing as well is that I can find out the problems using TIS but the stealers who are trained to use it cannot.

TBH I would not have let the stealers get away with it under warranty. Also if a fault is reported under warranty and they do not solve it you can go back outside of the warranty with the same fault and they should do it for free. I had my engine blow up on me outside warranty but I could prove I could link it to a fault reported under warranty so they had to do it for free (£4k repair!)
