Does the system not allow to go back to an earlier configuration in system restore?

If it does go back to a date you recall it working ok and try and remember what you have recently installed that could have caused the error, might help.

What is the laptop make and model? It may need a specific driver to recognise the Wireless card rather than use one built in to XP.

    What make/model laptop is it?

You can try going to the manufacturer's website to download the wireless driver for it.

And you'll be able to get all the drivers for the remaining items, don't forget the chipset drivers as well.

Yes that was my point - XP only has limited built in driver support so he will need the specific drivers for the card

Try this website, locate your model and then you should be able to downaload all necessary drivers. Usually manufacturers create a recovery partition on your hard disk (which you should burn to cd/DVD) or recovery disks this enables you to restore your computer to factory defaults.
