    Default Loud Clunk

    Hi All

This is my 1st post, so i apologise if its in the wrong forum...etc.

    I have an 03 2.2DTI vectra Elite

I have had a bad month with this car and am considering taking a lump hammer to it....

2 weeks ago my gearbox went and cost me £1000 to get a reconditioned one, with fitting.

When i got it back the turbo blew the same day, so just paid £300 for remanufactured one.

anyways, i have a loud clank coming from the front nearside, it does it over speed bumps, which i know has been mentioned on another thread. It also does it when you apply the brake, which i will try to explain -

When you are driving forward and apply the brake the clunk sounds, but if you depress the brake and apply it again it doesnt make the sound, it only makes the sound again after you have accelerated and then brake again.......my Mechanic thinks it sounds like something turning but is unsure so will have a look on Friday

Its almost like something is loose and the forward motion of the car moves it forward ( clunk) then moving forward again causes it to go back into place ( does this silently though)

    any ideas?

    Kev

    firstly to vectra-c......

secondly it sounds like a broken coil spring, as the vectra is prone for it

it will be cheaper to get yourself some lowered springs, eibachs are the best ones to buy

Sorry to hear you may have a bit of a lemon with that particular vec.

Re the noise, I would be concerned too, certainly sounds like those front wheels need coming off to check there's nothing loose especially in the area of the brakes, and suspension. The symptoms are similar to one of my earlier cars and was caused by the brake caliper securing bolts working loose. We were very lucky indeed, as I've known wheels lockup in the event one of the bolts come completely out resulting in the caliper flipping up often locking the wheel. It obviously needs investigating sooner than later. Its unlikely to be d/shafts, but certainly brakes , suspension units would be getting my attention. Though I've had no issues with springs myself, the vecs are very prone to having them break.

Had this issue a few weeks ago, exact same prob your describing, could be all of the above, but change your ANTI ROLL BAR LINKS before you do anything else, very cheap and easy HTH

    Read this halfway down

GENERALLY YOU KNOW WHEN THE ANTI-ROLL BAR LINKS ARE WORN AS THERE IS A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION AREA AS YOU TRAVEL OVER BUMPS. REPLACING THEM IS RELATIVELY EASY FOR A COMPETENT DIY-ER

    rolleyes

If it's just started since the gearbox has been done, could it be the mechanic didn't put something back correctly?

I had a mechanic cross thread a bolt holding the anti roll bar, and left it half hanging off. Then I had the shoes on my last car changed and the mechanic gave it back to me with air in the system and told me it needed a new master cylinder. Bled the system and it was fine, although I drove it home 25 miles with no brakess

All I'm saying is it might be worth having their work checked.

It was doing it before the gearbox broke, when it came back it had stopped, so we thought it was something in the gearbox clunking, but it started again a few days later
