Not really, it is the Corsa VXR engine which is good for 240PS when tuned, it is apparently a very over engineered unit.
I remember when they said 185bhp out of a 2.0 turbo back in the late 80's when Saab released it was pushing the boundries, now look what we have. 240PS Astra 2.0's etc
In 1984, Ford did the RS Turbo Escort, which was a 132bhp 1.6 CVH engine!! Technology has moved on so much, so a 180PS 1.6 Turbo today is not that much higher bhp than the Ford 132bhp engine of the 80's but today we have much better technology to apply it.
No mate, already available in the Astra (not the VXR) and the Corsa and Meriva VXR's. I would imagine in time they would be tunable to well in excess of 200bhp. Following a common trend towards smaller turbocharged petrol engines, with better fuel economy and lower emissions.

The same was true of the older 1.3 petrol compared to the 1.6 petrol. I took my 1.3 mk2 Cav (basically the same engine as the Nova SRi) to Dave Bogg's garage in Malton for a spot of rolling-road tuning, and he was very keen to point out that the 1.3 could be tuned higher than the 1.6. He fitted a K&N filter, NGK leads, removed the cold-air diverter intake section and tuned the whole thing as it sat there at 50mph... Got 25bhp more out of it (so ended up not far off a 115bhp 8v 1.8i at the time) - to get more would have needed cams, exhaust and other work to up the breathing. That engine was over-square (bore bigger than stroke) so it revved real easily and had more torque than otherwise expected (ran out of puff at the upper end though).
I like the sound of the V6 diesels - if they're anything like the PSA or Jag twin-turbo units, they will be something to behold. Hopefully they can be made light enough not to haul the front wide on every corner...
