Erm, just somthing to check, From what youve said about "in neutral its in 1st". It could be the control cables from the gear stick to the gear box. If you look under the bonnet you should see 2 big cables connected to a mechanism on top of the gear box. The cables look like brake cables that you get on a push bike. When you move the gear stick it pulls or pushes the cables and moves the mechanism which selects the gear. If its just this cable/mechanism thats broken then its not as expensive as a new gear box

    Hope thats of some use

    Pete

If it is you'll be able to see it from the engine bay. Look at where the gear shift rods enter the gearbox and you'll see them and what state they are in.

Can you actually engage any other gear with the gearstick? If you can, does it effectively lock the gearbox?

I has this on a previous car of mine (Mk 2 Astra) - the selector fork actuator had jumped out of it's location on the fork, meaning that it wouldn't disengage the gear (5th gear on mine).

Maybe yours has done the same? It was easy to fix, remove the selector input cover on the gearbox and reset the selector forks into neutral position and the same with the gearstick and refit. Done.
