    Default Up the Gritter!

Has anyone else noticed where they live if their council has cut back massively on the number of roads they grit? Maybe it is just Birmingham City Council.

During this cold snap, with icy roads every morning, they just aren't gritting the minor routes. To get to work, we take the roads in our estate - not gritted, but don't really expect them to be. Then we take the minor, but busy, routes through to the main road - these used to be gritted but the past few mornings they have been icy with white frost along the edges/middle of the road. The main roads are clear.

Traffic is crawling along because no one has any confidence in the conditions.

What's it like elsewhere in the country?

from start to finish all the minor but busy road were pretty much white although the car tracks made them drivable but slightly out and you were driving on ice!

Around the city centre this morning about 8:30 pm it was pretty much choca, although it was slowly moving along. A main road that I use is from the Hockley flyover to the Matalal island and I noticed this morning that this hadnt been gritted, there was still ice along the sides of the road's.

From memory there was a court case a couple of years back when a council was taken to court by a motorist that had benn in an accident on icy roads. The motorist clamied that had the roads been gritted an accident would not have occured.
The judge ruled that it was not the responsibilty of the council involved to have gritted the roads. Due to this ruling the council in my area cut back on gritting of roads almost overnight to save costs.

Vaux-Man-G, we are down near Rubery, where are you? They are pretty major routes coming from Hockley across to Matalan.

The thing that gets me I always try and leave a bit of extra space infront just incase, but then you get someone right up your bumper. Just waiting for them to slide one morning into the back of us!
