    Default Vibration

    I'm after some opinions here.

My 54 plate 120 CDTI has started recently to put a bit of vibration through the steering wheel at around 70mph. It doesn't feel like the usual 'wobbly' vibration from unbalanced wheels, more like the sort of vibration/sensation you would feel over rough surfaces.

It doesn't happen all the time and it does seem to disappear on the smoothest of surfaces - it doesn't happen at all under about 60mph

Having searched the forums about vibration I'm dreading a DMF failure but it seems more likely to be a suspension thing - but what to check first?

out of shape tyres, balancing (missing weights), but prob like mine- a wobbly drive shaft. its the only thing i've not had done and i bet your passenger seat wobbles a bit when there isn't someone to keep it still :-)

Wheel bearings / hubs? Any droning noise associated with the vibration?

No,theres no noise or droning. Just the sensation through the wheel.

I'll check if the passenger seat vibrates on the way home tonight!

Hmm, doesn't change when I dip the clutch so must be suspension. Seems only to happen on anything other than perfectly smooth road surfaces.

Suppose I'll have to check every bush/mounting now! Is there any that are known for going?

vibration from 20mph will be tyres out of shape

vibration from 60mph will be wheel balancing, go to any tyre centre and they will do a free check and if they doing it will cost about £5 per wheel

Yeah its the cheapest option so worth a try! It doesn't feel like the usual balancing wobble, and I put two new fronts (and balanced) on two months ago.

Anythings possible - would out of balance wheels feel OK on a smooth road surface?

Well all 4 wheels have been balanced and weren't out by much apparently. The garage said a couple of the wheels were a bit distorted probably due to some pothole injury but nothing serious.

Still got the vibration - so back to the drawing board, unless I find some steel wheels to swap my tyres over and try it out!

Am I the only person on the forum with steel wheels!

I have the same problem on my car, i have got a lot of play in the autogearbox diff bearing you can move the driveshaft up and down a bit where it goes into the box. Im sure this is not right. I now exactly what your talking about though, its been driving me mad.
