Question Big differences in local service costs?

I've rung three garages today for a price for a 2-year/40,000 mile service for my Vectra:

    Drive Vauxhall, Redcar £250.60
    Evans Halshaw, Peterlee £220
    Sherwoods, Stockton £180

They're all Vauxhall dealerships quoting for the same job on the same car, so why the big difference?

    Different groups/owners basically.

While the Vx parts prices won't (shouldn't) alter, the labour prices will.

I considered the labour charges but given the price difference, thought there must be more to it than that; you're probably right though.

Do other members find that dealer prices for parts are fairly standard across the board?

I always assumed so (for the trade in general rather than Vauxhall-specifically) until I came to buy panels for a motorbike and found price differences of up to £70 per panel, for the same official (Suzuki) parts. I always get a few prices now, just to check.

It's alright, the cheapest garage is as convenient for me as the others.

On an unrelated note, I noticed yesterday that somebody has clipped the front of my car and scuffed the paint beneath the front nearside headlight, both above and below the foglight surround

It's cleaned up pretty well and a post-wash rub with WD40 on a soft cloth lifted the traces of paint off my paintwork but it's still through to the plastic beneath.

    Ho-hum; a touch-up/respray beckons in the spring

Had a letter yesterday from the main VX dealer in Liverpool (Lookers) offering full service for £110. That's about half price for my engine. I get that sort of deal already from another small friendly VX dealer. Sign of the times, methinks.
