    Default Creaking auto gearbox

I've got a slightly strange problem....( don't worry its not that one ), when the car has warmed up properly, say 1 hour into its journey, when I come to a halt and hold it on the brake in Drive, I hear a low creaking sound, (like the car is moving forward on its brakes type of noise). If you then put the gearbox in Park, the creaking noise stops. It is not affecting the performance and it is a very smooth shifting box.

Its not a loud noise, if you have the radio on you don't hear it and it doesn't bug you. I am just intreaged by it and wonder if any other auto users have had it. Its on a 2.2 petrol.

I have driven loads of autos over the years, jags t5's senators and currently a 2.2 auto like yours and all of them have made this type of noise in the conditions you describe. I'm sure there's a techy answer for it but if the box is otherwise ok i wouldn't worry.
BTW what sort of MPG do you get, I've only had the car a couple of months and on a long trip got 37mpg ave but to and from work (14 mile round trip) its only 24mpg.

    Rider..

It's about the same MPG as we get out of Mrs GSi's 2.2 auto..

If we'd have known in advance I'd have bought her a 3.2..

Rider, I've had a Scorpio auto and a Omega auto before and they didn't do this. However, they were both rwd and this time its a fwd and there is less sound deadening in this Signum than the above two, so maybe now I'm hearing it better.
Don't get me wrong its not irritating and I can happily live with it, I'm just curious.

With regards to the mpg, longer runs suit it better. Yesterday I was out all day 200 miles multi-stop starts, A,B and M-ways and came back with 36.5mpg, last week one day I had it averaging 39.9mpg but couldn't quite crack 40mpg. Personally I like this engine/box combo, very smooth & quiet and doesn't cause any grief. But mpg isn't high on my list of priorities, I've got a van that will do 45mpg but its soooooooo "nnnnoooisssy", what I can't hear you !!!!

Mine doesn't make this noise and I get 37ish on the motorway commute to work and urban driving results in just less than thirty. Overall (3000miles) I'm getting 34.2mpg, which I consider not too bad for a largish 2.2 automatic.

Any minute now we'll get a posting along the lines of..........
"my 400bhp diesel SRi does 125mpg at a steady 140mph......"

Its not a diesel bashing thread, please.

My creaking gearbox is a matter of upmost seriousness.

(its not really, but I couldn't resist, before the diesel brigade hang me from the yard arm)
