Unhappy Think i need new wheel bearing

The car is making humming/growling noises and it's coming from the rear offside wheel. It gets louder when i'm coming to a stop (when braking). It's not so loud when moving but now that i'm listening for it i can hear it.

I diagnosed it so far as a wheel bearing. Anybody else got any thoughts?

If it is the bearing how much am i looking at do you think?

    Cheers

Easy to check, jack up the car a nd see if there is any movement in the bearing. Move the road well form left to right and then from top to bottom if you see what i mean. Also spin the wheel and see if it runs free or makes a noise

Very good, tell him what he's won

Just got it diagnosed today. My mate who owns a garage checked it over and said the back discs and pads are pretty much shot. (One side on the back has no pad left at all ) He said that the fronts will need replacing soon, i'm going to hold off and gather some money together after xmas and get the 314mm upgrade. He's going to change the rear discs and pads for £110 (parts and labour )

    Cheers for the help guys

I got the rear discs and pads changed this evening. Then drove it home, obviously. Didn't drive it very far but when i was pulling into the drive and braking i heard the noise again, only not so load. Does this mean the noise may have been coming from the front brakes? I'm hoping that i just need to change the front brakes and nothing else. How would i know if it was something like a brake servo or a wheel bearing?

Can anybody assure me that is all i will need to do to get rid of this noise? (Sounds like a scratching / grinding noise when braking, whilst moving slowly / coming to a stop)

    Cheers

Well you needed the rear brakes doing as they were danagerous to say the least from what you said. Did your mate check the front ones as well?

He said the front ones have a lip but will last a little while if i want to get hold of some 314's. I just concerned that i could spend near £300 for a set of upgraded brakes and find that there is still something wrong
