    Default Silly Curiousity Airbag Question.

I've often wondered where the airbag enters the car from when it goes off especially the passenger side.
Obviously I've seen the airbag markings on the left side of the dash (at the end) and obviously ones in the centre of the steering wheel I assume. Same with the side of the seats, but what happens to all these plastic covers that go over the airbag workings.

Thanks to the discovery type channels I know how they work etc, but where do they, and how do they get into the car when they go off,

ie. what happens to the plastic centre of the steering wheel for example. and where the hell does it come from when the passenger one goes off, does it blast of that end panel in some way.

    Anyone satisfy my curiousity

The steering wheel airbag, would you believe, shoots out from that little gap around the centre bit of the wheel.

This pic of VV's dearly departed Vectra C will help show where the curtain airbag comes from - i.e. down from the roof lining.

The passenger airbag literally comes out of the dashboard. If you look at and feel the dash on that side you'll see it's got a visible 'outline' and the dash is a bit softer to the touch in that area - that's where the airbag erupts from.

Thanks for those superb replies, a little wiser now. I had visions of being decapitated by all the flying plastic bits. Thanks for the pic and most informative info Duncan. Amazing stuff.

As Ed... says not a sight anyone want to see.

When i worked at universal salvage i had to go around all the cars and search through them and remove anything that would correspond to the cars id and the amount of airbags with blood, hair and bits of scalps was unreal, not sure if the airbags did the damage but they were covered

I wondered the same thing while in my Dad's old Jag. While I was sat in the comfiest sports seat ever made, while wafting along in near silence, the big V8 purring away, I noticed it said 'airbag' upon a lump of wood affixed to the dash......

So, if it goes off, it'll save your life, but give you splinters and concussion.......

going back few years in the time before cars had an airbag i had to go an try and identify what windscreen was fitted to a mk2 astra, the windscreen had a big bulge in front of the drivers area,i looked inside of the car and there was remains of blood, hair and some flesh in this bulge,i was nearly sick with the sight,no one had took any time to clean up the damage, car was in a body shop and the driver who owned the car was not at the time of the accident wearing a seat belt
