    Default Windows Vista

    Can anyone help??

The other half shut my desktop using hibernate by mistake instead of shut down, now can't get monitor to come back on again. PC fires up does all the right things but monitor says no signal and goes to sleep. I know it's not the monitor as tried her laptop on monitor and works fine, tried an LCD on my desktop and same thing says no signal and monitor goes to sleep.

    Can anyone help??

    Please??

Is the desktop definitely firing up okay? i.e. it may look like it is but sometimes some machines don't come out of hibernate properly and pulse a video signal but make all the other right noises and lights.

I'd pull the power cable out for a short while so that when you turn it back on again it's starting from a hard boot - I'd expect that will sort it.

I'm no expert but if you can get a picture up by linking to a laptop or other monitor you need to open the control panel and click power options,

On the left should be some links to various power options.... ie what the computer does when the lid is closed etc.

Change the settings back to either sleep or do nothing then see how you go.

If a cold reboot has not fixed it,

it may be worth pressing either F5 or F8 (depends on your m/c) which should bring up the safe mode setting, and selecting the 'Last Good' option.

It saves the settings for last good boot, try it and see if that works first.

Sounds like somethings got screwed up in the registry.

Got this the first time I shut down Vista to "sleep" mode (same as hibernate?).

Only solution was what Duncan suggested. Suffice to say no longer use "sleep".

Tell me about it, it's the only cause I can think of as she has been using on and off most of the day and said went as normal start and shut down but thinks may have pressed hibernate by mistake

    None of the above

I just can't seem to get the monitor to come on, meaning I can't get to any power options, many I am stuck

Plug monitor into laptop and monitor works perfect.

Once you think the PC is running have you tried pressing in the power button for more than 4 seconds to force it to power down and then turned it on again?

This should force it to start from "cold" and hence start the graphics card properly.

It's not an nVidia card is it?

Pressed the button and forced shut down but same thing, will go check what card it is, it is a HP Mini Desktop and I know the card has a fan on it and a DVi input.
