Default Thinking about changing to 225/45/17 instead of 215/50/17??

As you have probably read my other post's, I need to chnage some tyres on my dad's FL SRI CDTI, currently running on Goodyear NCT 5 215/50/17.

From another posting, someone has mentioned I shoudl go to 225/45/17 instead of 215/50/17.

Can anyone comment on their thoughts on this please, and also those that have changed to thse, can you please tell me the difference and/or benefits that you have seen? Do I need to have anything done, i.e. speedo calibration, etc?

    Thanks.

Many, many threads on this m8 - quick search will bring up loooads of 'em.

In a nutshell - yes, it's a good idea to change. It's an alternative size listed by Vx, you get a far wider choice of tyres and for the same make/model in both sizs the 225/45 will be a bit cheaper.

You'll have more rubber on the road and the lower profile tyre will make the car feel more planted.

Re speedo, it knocks it out ever so slightly but nothing to worry about. i.e. your speedo will over read slighty more than it was previously.

At least i know im just under for the speed camera's then. Nothing needs to be done then I take it!

After reading some threads on here, I am completely going off the Goodyear's....historically, I always try to stick with whatever was on the car originally, but in this case....I think I want to move over!

Yep, definitely get shot of the NCT5s - they're not great. Good for wear but not good for wet handling and road noise.

Re speedo - if you really want to you can get it Tech 2'd to adjust for it, but TBH it's not worth it. You'll me reading around 1-2mph more than before so not really worth paying for a Tech 2.

I've gone from 215/50/17 NCT5's to 225/45/17 Goodyear Excellences and it was the best thing I did - feels much more confident on the road (especially in the wet) and it should only cost you approx £160 per pair fitted and balanced from a local tyre centre.

225/45/17 Goodyear F1 Assymetrical fitted here and so far no complaints and they're definetly better than the NCT's.

I've got Falken FK-452s on mine - 225/45/ZR17/94Y. Decent tyres - wet or dry. Quite quiet too. Lifespan not that great, though: they wear on the front after about 6 months, get noisy on the rear after about 9 months or so. But they are cheap! £71-ish, delivered and inc. VAT from Camskill!

But grip is never a concern...

Still get prices from a local tyre place before buying online - when I got prices it was cheaper to get them locally than buy them online, pay for delivery and then pay for them to be fitted!

Sometimes its a false economy to buy online, plus you're supporting local businesses.

There, thats my bit done for local trade!
