Default In praise of 314mm brakes

Had an unexpected opportunity to road test my 314mm brakes last Sunday on my way to the NW meet at Middlewich.

Travelling at about the national limit on the M6 in the Knutsford area when the traffic ahead was all bunched up. So I slowed down and braked progressively keeping a set safe distance behind the car in front. As I got nearer to the car in front I glanced in my rear view mirror and then looked ahead to see that the guy in front had slammed his anchors on and I had to do the same and boy do those 314's bite.

The force of braking threw my jacket out of the passenger seat into the footwell and caused my steering lock to roll over in the same footwell. Good job I wasn't still on the standard 302's, as they wouldn't have stopped me quickly enough. Good job also there wasn't a car immediately behind me at that point.

Admittedly I shouldn't have glanced at the rear view mirror and it just goes to show how unexpectedly a collision can loom, and how a lapse in concentration can cost you dearly. I'm not one for 'driving on my brakes', but it's so comforting to know that the brakes do their job well in extremis. Taught me a lesson, I can tell you.

I also had reason to praise upgrading to the 314's from my 302's when a teenager cycled out right in front of me. The 302's aren't shabby but I think he would have been over my bonnet/under the car if I hadn't had the 314's.

They're nicely progressive too with loads of initial bite but without shoving your nose against the windscreen at the slightest touch. A very worthwhile mod

thats just it.. they were'nt!!!.... brown trousers moments meant the need for bigger stoppers.....

more BHP has to equal bigger brakes.. in fact, brakes first, then the HP hike..

Yep, 314's are more than adequate for normal use, just good to know they have enough for brown trouser moments.
