You wont need to. The only way it will affect warranty is if they can prove that it has interfered and caused a fault with said componant.

Not going to happen with an air filter.

Are you sure? I for one would not like to be in an accident for the insurance company to find an undeclared mod to the engine intake that can enhance performance. Remember, not all accidents you can walk away and then change your filter back to standard before the insurance company gets their hands on it. I have mine declared with the insurance company.

What I AM sure of is that no insurance company engineer or loss assessor is ever going to open the airbox to see what you've done in there, so the only way they'll ever know is if the airbox is smashed open by the impact, or you say to them "What about my K&N filter - it might have been damaged by the accident, so will you please pay for a new one?".

Ok, there are numerous scenarios, one you mention but bear this in mind, if you caused the accident and they found out you had an unspecified enhancement to your vehicle (and it could be as per your description, the airbox was smashed) then the least of your worries would be if they were going to pay for a replacement air filter. If for example there was a fatality, then you may find yourself uninsured and paying for the rest of your life. Believe me it happens.

Your probably right, they may not open your air box to have a look. But at the end of the day, if they have reason to think the car is modified then they will dig deeper. Why run the risk when most insurance companies would not increase premium's for just a filter.

I have know it for a local Vectra that had a bodykit on, was inspected in great detail after an accident to see what else was modified. They found other things not declared and turned down the claim.

As for warranty, a modification will only effect your warranty if it has a direct implecation, air filters are frowned upon by dealers, as they are oiled, excess oil can coat the air mass meter causing it to fail and also as they are free flowing filters, their filtration is not as good as the original so debris 'could' go into the engine.

Yes I know that these are extreme case's and probably unlikely but you have to bare this in mind. I don't beleive these K&N filters offer any real advantage anyway unless you have a highly tuned car.

My old Zafira GSi T was at Courtenay stage 3 but still ran a normal OE filter.

IMO not to declare is madness.
