You don't need it for bog standard viewing or even most of the interactive stuff. When you have a new installation, they will not instal without a land line because they have to connect the box to their system to log it all on. If you're just moving all your original equipment then there should be no need for them to connect so there's no reason they can't move it without a phone line.

they will pester you like hell though!!! especially if you have multiroom. i guess this is to check that you haven't put the second decoder into next doors and are sharing the bill! (believe me if i had a neighbour that friendly it would happen!!)

however, they can only force you to do that if you are under contract - if not then youre laughing. I would just let them move it and then sort out a phone line later if you really need it.

Ok I will let them do the business and try and do without anything that requires a phoneline. I'm determined not to give B*ll**** Telecom any of my money again!

I guess they work dfferently in different parts of the country - when we oved to our 2 year old house, the phone line had never been cornnected. They arranged the engineer and said it would cost £75 toset up - becase we needed the line, we agreed. However, when the engineer arrved, he took one look and said 'Oh, the cabling is all here already - just needs hooking up!'

He then told us to call BT when the bill arrived to charge for the install, and that if we explained he hadn't really had to do anything, they wouldn't charge us. Sure enough, the bill came - I made the call, and he had put into his notes that he hadn't really done anything - the bill was written off straight away over the phone!

    Strange!!

When I had Sky installed I was told that they MUST connect it to a landline, he did this but couldn't get it to talk to there end, so he got hold of his mobile and rang them and did it that way, he said they would probibly send someone to sort it out.

I told him that i would tidy the cable up (under carpets etc), and when he went disconnected the cable and put it in the cupboard, never heard form them again.

When i moved round the other halfs place, i put a spare dish up and just took my decoder round, when we came back here just picked up the decoder and bought it back here.
